Stumbling across Alexis Ffrench’s classical piece “Reborn” is probably one of the highlights of this month. The British musician and composer has this unique ability to create music that touches the soul—described on his website. His music, the website continues, “refuses to be penned in by genre, time period, or by expectations”. There is something wonderful about the piece “Reborn”, which came out in 2018. Played in the classical piano style, Ffrench is keen to show the magical power of music in capturing the far, distant and perhaps incomprehensible emotions. The piece has moments of low and high tones, of repetition and divergence. It captures beautifully the variety and spice while at the same time, in the repetitive interludes, confronting the listener with the idea of chaos.

It is no wonder it has been on the loop for a couple of days now, and truly, in moments where words fail, music speaks louder, and Ffrench’s music has allowed me to think critically of the idea of being reborn. What does being reborn actually entail? This year, as I meditate on the price of freedom, I am looking at life beyond the obvious, and I am finding ways of mending the patches, filling the void and trying constantly to be in a season of rebirth. As I think through and with the help of Ffrench, I am reminded of the silent chaos, the disruptive joys and moments where nothing feels like much—the mundane.

So how do you balance all these while attending to the daily demands? Perhaps the answer and the real freedom lie in waking up every day to choose to be reborn. Put differently, the becoming. Those numb as well as exhilarating moments eventually pave the way for an expression of a different version of you.
